1st Exhibition - Brighton University Graduates Show 2006

Below is a small sample of what you might have heard in the second floor corridor, east wing of Grand Parade. It was recorded through a small stereo microphone placed in front of the information point, right in the middle of the corridor, and thus the effect of six speakers moving sounds over 26m is to be imagined rather than experienced.

You will also hear the sounds of people talking, things being wheeled about and other typical noises for the space, as well as the occasional ticking from my poor old minidisc recorder.

The more sudden changes in parameters are the result of pushing the black button, which would randomly choose a new set of processes and values from within specified limits.

08/06/06-sample1 - An example of a few different sounds and the resulting 'echoes'.

08/06/06-sample2 - Another example of the piece in use.

08/06/06-sample3 - A longer example of what would happen if the piece was left alone for longer than 2 - 3 minutes. Sounds would begin in the foreground and slowly dissolve into the background.

Pre-effects recordings

People passing through the corridor were invited to make a 'comment' through the small microphone on the front panel. What was not known to them was that these comments were being recorded, and stored on my computer.

I took this measure for no other reason than to document how people used the system, but it turned out to be an interesting thing in itself. An odd juxtaposition of the profound and profane, philosophy and farce, noises, animal impressions, poetry, mobile ring tones and just about anything else people could think of.

These are some of the more interesting passages I recieved through the microphone.
